A word on the process of Authoring DVD's

Authoring is generally defined as the process of preparing content, encoding video and audio, and creating the final DVD image. In the case of DVD, authoring is a complex process since it involves the laying out of multiple audio tracks and a video track, generation of sub-titles, menu pages, parental lock-out features, interactive functions such as program search, time search, seamless play, and pause, and finally editing of video and audio. Since authoring is always performed along with encoding and disc formatting, it is, in many cases, referred to as the entire DVD pre-mastering process. This is part of the process when we Convert VHS Tapes to DVD.

DVD takes advantage of the MPEG-2 compression technology to achieve picture quality comparable to that of D-l, the CCIR-601 TV studio production standard. MPEG-2 is a flexible and scaleable compression scheme which can produce bit rates that range from 1 to 40 Mbps. As implemented for DVD, MPEG-2 encoding is a two-pass process. During the first pass, the encoder scans the video source, detects scene changes and determines the optimal bit rates for each frame. During the second pass, higher bit rates are assigned to complex frames and sequences with more activity and lower bit rates to "simple" frames. The two-pass process guarantees the best possible picture quality for the given video clip and disc storage capacity.

Convert VHS Tapes to DVD Convert, Edit & Enjoy for Decades to Come

As DVD players become more popular — and VCRs slowly become obsolete — look at your video library. Do you have any precious family videos on VHS? Memories of vacation trips, family genealogy, or just your personal copy of Super Bowl XX captured with the VCR?

Put it on DVD! When it comes to long-term storage, consumer-grade VHS tapes are not your best bet. While they have a shelf life of about 30 years, signs of tape decay can begin to appear in as soon as 5 years. By moving your memories to DVD, you'll gain a longer shelf life for your videos with a better image quality.

You have two good options to make the move:

Have someone else do it.

How many videos do you need to convert? If the answer is only one or two, getting the equipment necessary to do it may not be your best move. Numerous companies will convert your VHS tapes to DVD for reasonable prices; for a low volume of tapes, or if you're concerned about your technical know-how to do it, this may be your quickest and easiest answer.

Do it yourself! If you're fairly familiar with your computer and DVD burner, converting a VHS tape to DVD can take only a few hours per tape. What You Need:

  • Computer with a large hard drive with considerable free space — allow at least 2.5 MB of disk per minute of video; allow twice that per minute if you intend to edit the video file
  • Video Capture Card — either a USB video-capture device or a PCI-based FireWire card
  • Video editing software
  • DVD Burner
  • Blank DVD media compatible with your burner and DVD player
  • Patience
